Popularity Vote 2010 - Hosta

Post by sugar »

Just like last year and the year before ... let's vote for the most popular hosta of the forum, during the winter

Just like last year, you can 'nominate' 20 plants... The order of the plants does not have any impact. You don't need to grow the species you name, but we like some comment why those plants are your favorites.

Please don't add a number or anything else in front of your list, it will make it much harder to do the vote counting...

Will make a great purchase list for some of us :bd: I'll try to update the ranking every day or two...

High Society : took me some years to grow this one into a nice clump
Rhino Hide : my plant is still rather small, but this one should be a real winner
Justine : a tetraploid version of June Fever
Neptune : nice blue
Lakeside Love Affair : not easy to get it big, but worth the waiting
June :
Touch Of Class : June, but better
One Man's Treasure : nicest looking green wet red petioles imho
Mr Blue : Blue with red petioles, great leaf shapes
Blue Mouse Ears : probably overrated
Setsurei : nice green with ruffles
Prarie moon : Vibrant yellow with red petioles
Flemish Steel : a new intro from Danny, tetraploid Dewed steel, with great substance
Essence of Summer : a fragrant Hosta with good substance
Kiwi Full Monthy : very nice plant
Half and Half : Yet another center marginated hosta, but a very nice one
Seducer : nice variegation
Popo : great little blue
Dixie Chick : love the shiny leafs
Lakeside Babyface

Am working on this. My list is down to about 25. But I wonder if we shouldn't be having an addition popularity poll for MINI hostas. I have several of which I'm VERY fond and some of which I find very useful as edgers in the garden. But they will never win when compared to a Liberty or Regal Splendor or other spectacular large hosta.

Many of my hostas are still young'uns so their full potential is a few years away. But of those I've had awhile, I'd have to pick:
Sum & Substance -- those huge, thick leaves
Liberty -- the leaf colors and shape
Sagae -- stately, great to look at
Magic Fire -- colors and leaf pattern
Paradise Glory -- deep green and blue leaves

Krossa Regal -- the vase shape and soft blue color
Queen of the Seas -- upright clump, leaf shape/color
First Frost - always catches my eye
Remember Me -- also an eye catcher
Summer Breeze -- beautiful chartreuse and green leaf pattern

Black Hills -- very very green, cupped and upright
Queen Josephine -- leaf color and shine
Sun Power -- vase shape, bright leaf color and wavey edges
Silver Bay -- new this year, but color is soft and leaves are nicely corrogated
Guardian Angel - glue/green/grey leaf colors that change throughout season

Touch of Class -- always an eye catcher
Temptation -- leaf color pattern, changes through season
Paradigm -- leaf characteristics
Tokudama Flavocircinalis -- colors, growth habit
Sunshine Glory -- apple green leaves with cream margins and nice corrugation

Thanks for the opportunity to vote!

My list is going to be small, because I only have about 30 varieties myself, but here are my favorites in no particular order:

Twilight - The color combo for me is stunning--deep green with yellow margins. Nice ovate leaves.
Regal Splendor - An oldie but always a goodie. I love the vase-shaped hostas.
Liberty - What's not to like?
Blue Ivory - Growing very well for me. I love the blue/cream color combo.
Vulcan - Growing like gangbusters. Very robust for a hosta with so much white.
Maui Buttercups - A nice yellow/chartreuse with cupped, dimpled leaves. Love it.
Rainforest Sunrise - Chartreuse with green margin Maui Buttercups relative. Looking good for me!
Tropical Storm - Another Maui Buttercups relative with the reverse coloring of Rainforest Sunrise. Nice.
Blue Mouse Ears - Popular with good reason!
Lakeside Baby Face - A really cute mini/small with a neat growth habit. Another with dark green leaves and thin gold margins.

Some of these are in their first year with me but are so vigorous and growing so well I don't have a problem voting for them. I have others that are quickly becoming favorites, but these are the cream of the crop for me this year. :)

I've been looking at this long enough, it's time I made a contribution.

'June' - the chameleon in the garden
'Raspberry Sorbet' - it's the flowers
'Blue Mouse Ears' - it's hard to choose from among the Mouse Ears family, the patriarch wins by default
'Rhino Hide' - such substance
'Rosedale Spoons' - cupped, puckered, what more do you want
'Ray of Hope' - love the Nerine-like flowers
'Maui Buttercups' - puckered, yellow, great substance, sun-tolerant
'Blue Sliver' - a somewhat unruly mass of leaves
'Dream Queen' - stately, majestic, commands attention
'Fortunei Hyacinthina' - no yard should be without one... or two

I'll stop at 10, otherwise I won't.

Hard to pick ten since most of mine look awful this year. So I'll pretend the hail never happened and here are my faves from what I have in my garden.

Tokudama Flavocircinalis (like the coloration, texture and it's usually ignored by slugs)
Manhattan (good texture, form, flowers. interesting green)
High Society (like the coloration, doesn't need a lot of sun to turn white, unlike Remember Me)
Thunderbolt (like the form and thickness of leaves)
Mister Watson (really like the texture as it matures)
First Frost (growing well and is largely ignored by slugs) also like Sleeping Beauty this year.
Regal Splendor
Rosedale Spoons (interesting green)
Guardian Angel (mine is still young, but is keeping the variegation all season, which I like)
Deep Blue Sea (good color and form, and the sheen is interesting)
