Thanks for the kind words Renaldo.

I don't know the parentage from H.Andorian. It is a seedling i found in the garden.
Here a photo from the start of this Hosta from 2005.

Hi Renaldo & Pia, thanks for the kind words.

I have also find a sport from H.Chinese Sunrise a few years again.
This one have a wider dark green edge and the leaf is ticker.
I give him the name 'Abana'.
The lab is still producing the first plants for the market autumn 2011.

That looks like a very good improvement of 'Chinese Sunrise', Dirk! Good Luck with it.

Thanks Renaldo !

The lab tested the leaf from Chinese Sunrise & Abana and the result is:
The dark green edge from Abana is tetraploïde form from Chinese Sunrise.
The center from Abana is a mix, not complete tetraploïde form from Chinese Sunrise.

Fine da!

Interesting. Seems to be the way with many of the newer plants that aren't totally tetraploid but somewhere in between.

Hi Renaldo, it depends:
If you give a Hosta to the lab for making tetraploïd is everything tetraploïd in the Hosta.

By H.Abana it is on natural way happened by himself.

PS: The reason that you find more tetraploïd versions from excistence Hosta's is that the leaf is ticker but for more reason is that the edge is wider than the original and more spectaculair and good for the business from the owner of the Hosta.

It's an interesting subject, Dirk.
Bob Solberg is going to be giving a talk on ploidy at the Winter Scientific meeting in January.
It will be interesting to hear his perspective on the subject.

It will be interesting ofcourse Renaldo.

But for the most larger Hostagrower here in Europe it is more a commercial deal for selling more plants.

For people they make Hostas from seeds you can't make a Hosta like that potential.
The most exciting Hostas are sports in tissue culture from popular Hostas and they go further with tetraploïde form for even more attractive Hostas.

I think for some Hosta lovers are some own seedlings more value than the sports of other Hostas.

Fine day!

Some sports are great, Dirk. I'm getting into growing seed so I'm going in the 'other' direction.

Giving a hosta to the lab
Testing the hosta

:hmm:

Where, how and for how much do you send a hosta for testing ?
What sorts of tests can be done ?
Think the only plant labs we have are in connection with different sorts of education and I do not hink you can just walk in from the street with a plant under your arm.

Hi Pia, most important test is testing on virusses. Some Hostas are sensitive for virusses and you can not se them all on the leaves. Some virussen are sleeping in the Hosta and seeing after a few years on the plant.

A good tissue culture lab is doing everytime the test for virusses on new Hostas.

For the tetraploïdetest for Abana it was out interest from the lab for study material in wich way the Hosta is coming to the tetraploïd form from himself.
