Gypsy Rose through the season

I was poking around on some of my photos and realized I could put together a color sequence. This is my biggest GR - I have had it about about 4 seasons.

Love the fragment, how old is it ?

Your first pic look like Striptease, a great older hosta.
That said I have to fess up
I do not like GR and have allways thought it was a sort of cull from Striptease- lacking the white line ... it have up to 80% culls in TC, but know a lot of people like it. Mine is a present from a very good friend, there was no polite way.. or rather I could not find it

The fragment is from a plant I bought in 2008. I had it in my office on a window sill for two winters. Finally put it in the ground this past season.

Gypsy Rose does have the white line. I posted some pictures a while ago discussing the line. The plant needs sun to bring out the line but then the center lightens up and the line becomes hard/impossible to see. In the picture sequence you see the "line" early in the season. As the days lengthen this plant gets more sun (it is facing south) and the center goes to white blotting out the white line. My GRs in shade keep the line longer, if they have it, and the center keeps its yellow color until late in the season.

The fragment will get the normal GR look this coming season. I think this is the juvenile phase that some go through.

My opinion on the difference between Striptease and Gypsy Rose:
Striptease leaf is bigger.
Striptease center color is dull compared to GR.
Gypsy Rose leaf seems thicker.
In shade the GR edge is darker.

This is a very nice series of shots, Ed, and quite helpful in the case of these plants whose looks change through the
season. Had I not ordered my Gypsy Rose from an impeccable source, I would have wondered the first year if it
really was GR.

If Gypsy Rose gets good sun it will have a white line until the sun "bleaches" the center and you can't see the line anymore. In shade there is little sign of the white line.

Here are a couple of plants in good shade with very little white line showing.

So I have to rethink about it

Mine did grow in all morning and early midday sun, but then shaded from a tree the rest of the day and here up nort I guess it have not been enough sun. It did get the sort of white color rather early and I am no fan of that color.
But did I understand you the right way.. if kept in shade it will be a smaller Striptesae with a broader center .. line or not

Gypsy Rose should be smaller then Striptease when planted side-by-side.

The "fragment" came back looking like a normal Gypsy Rose.

I like GR very much. It definitely is a good deal smaller than 'Striptease' and the center is lighter.

Now should we have another conversation about GR vs. 'T Dawg'?

T-Dawg (and Mata Hari) have dull centers compared to GR. (But that's my opinion, in my garden and I'm color blind.)

Interesting pics above. Mine was doing weird stuff last year. I'm anxiously waiting to see what it looks like this year. I anticipate a couple more weeks before they start emerging.

The last picture was taken 3 days later and the plant is getting darker. This is also the biggest leaf I could find on the plant.

Viktoria brought up the T-Dawg question. Here's one of mine this season (the way it should look) and a second one with a problem - don't know what happened to it but it was good sized last season. The last shot is from two years ago - I didn't get any good shots last year.

Here are some shots of Mata Hari and T-Dawg. Mata Hari is a lot bigger this season then I remembered it. It looks more like Striptease. T-Dawg is looking bright this time of year.
