Sport of Hanky Panky

Post by redcrx »

Last year I noticed some odd leaves coming off of my oldest Hanky Panky. I wrote about it last season.
http://www.perennialnursery.com/forums/ ... =1&t=53093
Late last season I took it off and moved it near my white centered sports.

(update Nov. 15, 2014 - in 2012 I registered this plant as Dubious Behavior)

I finally tracked it down this season and got some shots.
Looks a little like Lady Godiva.

Went back to get some shots this evening. Storms had been through during the day and caused some leaf damage.
The first shot shows the plant next to some white centered Striptease sports (White Bikini and others).
The second shows leaf damage.
The third and fourth show a small fragment of Hanky Panky still attached to the plant that I had missed before.

I though I would put together a leaf series, from last season, to show changes through the season since I was tracking this "sporting" piece and this leaf is distinctive with the extra center lobe on the right. All Hanky Pankys make this color switch - in my garden the switch occurs through May and June.

Here is the plant late in the season. I have added a comparison shot to show the leaf size difference. The plant has lost the white between the colors. I have a feeling the white may show-up if the plant is in more sun - where it is gets good light but no direct sun.

Ed, is your sport doing the color switch too? Amazing to see that on a plant with the wide center
and narrow edge. Sometimes I don't even notice when Hanky Panky does the switch, but you would
certainly be able to tell with this one! I hope it holds up for you...would love to see a huge clump of that!

Yes it does a color switch in mid-May. Here are a few shots during the season.

I just noticed that the first and last leaf in the last set of photos are the same leaf.

Looking at your Hanky panky I would have gone more so with it being Striptease it looks exactly like my Striptease and its an old plant now. The further pics look like its maybe gone back to Gold standard, but having one that starts out as one plant then changes to a stronger sport version is in my opinion no bad thing
