Hosta of the Day 'Spilt Milk' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta - 'Spilt Milk'. Mine was new spring 2006. I took a couple of divisions from it this past spring, but other than that it has never been divided. Mine doesn't have as much milk "spilt" on it as some, but it's still a lovely hosta.

One of my favorites in the garden! I lost a big old clump a few years ago and immediately got another to
replace it. It's certainly one fo the most distinctive. Once you see it and know what it is, you can't miss it!

Our Spilt Milk was doing great until late last summer when it almost died; we still don't know what was ailing it. I dug it up thinking it might be voles but could find no obvious problem with the root system. It separated easily into 3 pieces, one of which just didn't come up this spring. The remaining two pieces seem to be getting along okay and we look forward to them gaining in size next year.

Yours looks quite misty. So glad some of it survived and is doing well this year.

Phil and Gayle, that is exactly what happened to mine, only the whole thing died. It was just gone. It never showed any signs of distress,
and no signs that voles were at it. It just was there one year and didn't come up the next. It was an open winter with no snow cover and
very cold temps that year, and I think perhaps I didn't have it planted quite deep enough to protect the crown under those cirucmstances, but
that was just a guess.

Dennis - that's interesting. Actually, quite pretty. I wonder if it will retain that margin.

Name: H. 'Spilt Milk' - 2008

Description: One of the most unique hostas. A stunning clump of blue-green cupped foliage with an unusual assortment of streaking and misting in the centre of each leaf.

Size: Large (36"w x 20"h) - I believe mine is larger
Origin: Parentage Unknown
Flowers: Pure white tubular in late spring.
Source: Floral and Hardy
Added to garden: Spring 2006
Mine doesn't have as much streaking as many do, but it has grown well.

This is mine that I bought from Chris in the spring of 2011. I had it in a pot all summer long and it looked good. This year in the ground it didn't seem to do too much for me, so I never got a pic. Actually, I took few pics due to the heat/drought stress.... Hoping for a floriferous 2013!! Does Spilt Milk require some light/sun for the white streaks to stand out?

Received a nice 2 eyed 'Spilt Milk' from Hallson's in 2004. It did well until 2013 when tree roots got to it. It will take some time to recover.

I think Spilt Milk is the only hosta I have killed. I need to get another. These pictures are enticing. I feel enabled. Yeah, Spilt Milk and Liberty. Then I'll be done.

This might be the best my Spilt Milk has ever looked - this is it's 10th season in my garden. It sits in the middle of one of my Striptease type collections - good grief that space is 10 years old.
