Two different looks of Kiwi Full Monty

Post by redcrx »

Kiwi Full Monty is a blue edged sport of Striptease.

I got two small KFM in a couple of years ago. They were planted in too much shade and looked sickly. Last year I took the worst looking one and planted it in full sun. This season the one left in the shade looks fine. The one in the sun looks healthy but completely different.

Next year it will probably go back to its normal look.

:hmm: the one in the sun looks a bit weird, but may be "normal" next year. The one in the shade looks exactly like my Gypsy Rose.. do you remember my surprise when you showed pics of yours ?

Yes, I have a couple of topics where I'm showing different looks of Gypsy Rose. It all depends on how much sun the plant gets. (Actually, thinking back, I have posted a lot of Gypsy Rose - I was just thinking about the segment on its white line.) The KFM shown here in the sun has the same look as a "fragment" on Gypsy Rose I posted last season. I think its a matter of youth and shock. Next year this KFM will be normal and large.

Just found some Striptease with that same "odd" leaf coloration. These get a lot of sun in the afternoon. These are fragments that came off a large Striptease I broke up early in the season. Some of the plant went back into the ground where it had been and some went into pots. These two little fragments were just thrown into my new front flower bed and the bigger piece just put up a scape.

Hostas are trange and sort of have their own life. You can transplant so many other plants with out any weird things going on, but with hostas you never know

My Striptease.- 10 years old or so were rather blue this year :hmm:

Did you have any big problems with the floodings or storm ?

The storm gave us rain for over 24 hours but we didn't get hit with the really bad winds. Many areas were flooded but we came out OK. We were lucky - no trees came down.

Do you have any pictures of the "blue" Striptease. I'm always interested in the odd looking ones. I have Blue Striptease along with KFM and Patricia the Stripper which is supposed to be blue but mine is too small yet to tell. I'm looking for Blue Without You - I have seen pictures.

I had started a new posting but found this old one that talking about the same plants.

These two Kiwi Full Monty came in about 6 years ago. They were both planted under the leyland cypress I am now pruning. About 5 years ago I started planting the south side of my hosta with hosta. I moved one of the Kiwi Full Monty into the direct sun in that garden. Here they are today now that I can get a photo of the little one under the cypress - its leaf edge is getting a little sun burned. As the cypress got bigger the small KFM declined.

No, I have found that growing some Striptease family member in direct sun causes them to have better white lines. The down side is they get ragged earlier in the season. Where those growing in shade have little white but look nicer longer in the season.

Here is Snake Eyes in a bed that hasn't been weeded yet. This plant is growing in the same conditions as the Kiwi Full Monty - it's about 10 feet away. That's Blue without You on the left and Lottie in the top/right.
