Hosta of the Day 'September Sun' - Post Your Pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hosta is 'September Sun'. A lovely and enthusiastic grower. Also very fertile and I have a four-year-old yellow seedling I'm watching. Mine was new September 2005. Over the years I've taken a few divisions from it, but not many.

Another beautiful one. How does it grow compared to stained glass? They both look quite similar and I'm running out of room lol.

I think the mound structure is quite different. This one is a very tidy mound, while SG is not, IMO. Quite different in flowering - this one is not fragrant. Mine are on opposite sides of the same tree and it's never struck me that there was any similarity.

Just looked at your stained Glass you posted earlier and you're right, they are quite different.

Very nice... and I'll bet very sun tolerant. Any difference between 'September Sun' and 'Polar Moon'? Both are sports of 'August Moon' with similar, or identical, variegation. Anyone grow both 'September Sun' and Polar Moon' in the same garden? :)

I don't have 'Polar Moon' but they could well be virtually the same - just sported in different gardens and registered by different people. You see it with sports of other plants.

See what you mean about untidy mound with SG otherwise I would have thought sg instead of SS

Name: H. 'September Sun'

Description: Leaves are heart-shaped, gold with a wide green margin. White flowers.

Size: Medium-Large (36"w x 16"h)
Origin: sport of H. 'August Moon'
Flowers: Near-white with lavender stripes. Bell-shaped on upright, leafy scape. Early July.
Source: acquired in a trade with a friend
Added to garden: September 2005
Notes: Will take more sun than some. I would consider mine mature and it's doing very well. It also produces masses of viable seed.

I don't grow September Sun, but have had this Polar Moon for many years. It's always been a favorite of mine.

2014 - 10th year in my garden and it's looking a bit crowded. I may chop some off the side of the mound next year. Picture from July 16, 2014.

2015 - July 25. September Sun still outgrowing the space available to it. I took a few divisions from it this autumn.
