Daily Hosta #2 - 'Kinbotan' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Kinbotan'

Description: The dark green, round leaves are delicately edged in yellow. Makes a tight clump.
Size: Mini
Origin: Unknown, Japan
Flowers: White striped flowers
Added to garden: June 2010
Notes: A nice mini which is supposed to be a vigorous grower. It's in a pot for now until I decide where to put it permanently. It will be interesting to compare it with 'Kifukurin Ko Mame'.

This is a fast growing mini that would likely do well as an edger though mine is still in a pot.

In 2013 I divided this one up and planted it in individual eyes. It has the makings of a very good ground-cover hosta. This is what it looked like in 2014.

I got this little guy in 2010. I'm always expecting to lose it but this season it put up flowers.
Mine had the label venusta 'Kin Botan' when I got it.

I noticed this was on the list of "hard to grow" hostas. Mine has been anything but. But yours - well maybe.

I see MyHostas database has TWO listed:

Kinbotan Japan/P. Ruh 2002 venusta seedling View Details http://www.myhostas.be/db/hostas/Kinbotan
venusta 'Kinbotan' Japan View Details http://www.myhostas.be/db/hostas/venusta+%27Kinbotan%27

I think you have something different???

I think they are the same plant. In Zilis's The Hostapedia he doesn't differentiate - his reference to venusta "Kinbotan" just says to see "Kinbotan".

Here it is in 2011 when it looked the best. The difference in flower color is interesting but the striping is the same.

Last year I picked up a venusta at a local nursery and out of the assortment they had I picked the one that had a sport. I separated the sport and figured that what I had was likely 'Kifukurin Ko Mame' but that went by the wayside when the variegation had disappeared by season's end. When they came back up again this year the variegation was back and so what I have is in fact 'Kinbotan'.

This shot is from a couple of days ago and the edge variegation is starting to viridesce already.
