Daily Hosta - 'June' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'June'

Description: The leaves are a rich, powdery gold, with a very irregular blue-green margin. The centre will turn to creamy-white in bright light. Very heavy substance leaf.
Size: Small (20"w x 15"h)
Origin: sport of H. 'Halcyon'
Flowers: Funnel-shaped, violet in mid-summer. Sets fertile seed.
Added to garden: spring 2006
Notes: Hosta of the year 2001. This Hosta always looks good. Sunburn and slugs don't bother it a bit.
I took a division from my first plant in 2009 and planted it in a different location in my garden. It's striking how much different the colour is.

Nice leaf. Might be something to do next year - take close-ups of all the leaves.

My June gets morning sun. It looks very similar to the Great Expecations I have in a pot behind it.

This is also another first year plant for me, I was surprised by how many scapes it had this year.

I refer to my 'June' as my 'chameleon' hosta, since it is so variable, depending on how much direct sun it sees. These two shots from last year show different sections of the same plant, with the difference being the amount of direct light these parts of the plant see.

'June' may not have been the fastest growing hosta in my yard, but it's been a steady one, having gone from a single shoot TC in 2004 to a crown with over 50 eyes on when I dug it up earlier this year for division.

As Ann said, "everyone's favorite hosta". Don't we all have pictures of this one? This hosta just compels us to photograph her.

We have four or five like the one above, spread throughout our gardens, but that wasn't enough - we had to plant a whole circle of them! This was their second year there and we're really looking forward to next year.

I'm still growing two divisions - one east of the house and one west (though close to the house next door). Noticeable differences in the colour and I think the differences increase as the season progresses. This was still early.
'June' east of my house - gets more morning sun. June 13, 2012

'June' west of the house - also June 13, 2012. This was divided from the other plant a few years ago.

My June is about 10 years old, it has always been a dark (shade) colouring no matter how much sun it gets. I DO beleive there are a few versions of June that have got on the market. Some are stable like mine some change in sun and some always seem to be bright.
I have a feeling the neglect mine suffered for a couple of years (during my divorce) set it back quite a bit, however divisions I have taken off it seem to have survived.

I have 3 in different parts of the yard and they all are shaded nearly all day, only dappled light gets to them. I've had mine for 2 or 3 years now. Loved them so much, I had to order 3 'June Fever' last week :-)

Seems like everyone's Junes are just a little different depending on location. I like them all. I bought a second June this year which I planted in more open sunlight. I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like next year. This is the best picture I have of my mature June. It was taken on May 31, 2011. It's starting to crowd Halcyon which is behind it. As you can see it gets dappled light during the day and late afternoon sun.
