Daily Hosta #1 - 'Grand Prize' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Today's hostas are related and similar except for size.

Name: H. 'Grand Prize'
Description: Leaves have dark green centres with wide glowing chartreuse edges. A plant of heavy substance.
Dark purple flowers mid season.
Size: Small (24"w x 14"h)
Origin: Walter's Gardens. Tetraploid sport of H. 'Grand Tiara'
Flowers: Dark purple, striped, tubular flowers mid season.
Added to garden: July 2011
Notes: too new to have much to comment about; but so far it seems to be a happy small hosta.

I have both 'Grand Prize' and 'Grand Tiara' growing in a fair bit of sun and find that by summer they are neigh impossible to tell apart. On both the edge variegation will have gone almost white. When they emerge however they are quite different, 'Grand Tiara' has pale green variegation whereas 'Grand Prize' has this rich golden yellow you see here. I'll try to remember to take side-by-side pictures of them next year throughout the growing season for easy comparison, for now it'll have to be one below the other.

BTW, 'Grand Tiara' is polyploid, as determined by Flow Cytometry, as is another member of the Tiara family, 'Amber Tiara', see Don's List of Polyploid Hostas

I guess I never realized how similar those two were. So the tetraploid comparison between Grand Prize and Grand Tiara must be similar to Patriot and Minuteman - Patriot is polyploid and Minuteman is tetraploid.

Chris, 'Grand Tiara' has been shown to be tetraploid, well, actually both poly and tetraploid -'Grand Tiara' 4-2-2 and 4-4-4 as measured with Flow Cytometry- which to me indicates a fair bit of variability. 'Grand Prize' is presumed to be tetraploid, but I haven't seen FC analysis and assumptions are a dangerous thing, look at 'Blue Mouse Ears' for example, it's always been assumed to be tetraploid but has now been proven to be a mere diploid.

2014 - I think both of the plants shown above are larger than mine is. But mine is slowly growing.

I was working on a trough project all week and needed something with yellow in it. At a garden center they had large pots of Grand Prize putting up a late flush of yellow leaves and flower scapes - just what I was looking for (I was looking for Platinum Tiara but couldn't find any quickly).

Those look great - bigger than the one I've had for 3 years.

2015 - June 21. Mine is still small, but bloomed more than once this year and put out new growth throughout the year which had the very yellow margin. It gets a lot of sun now due to the loss of a tree.

2017 update. July 27. This one grew well in spite of too many slugs. And in 2018 it is stunning and huge. This was 2017 though.
