Daily Hosta #2 - 'Gold Drop' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Gold Drop'

Description: Miniature, heart shaped, thick chartreuse leaves.
Size: Small
Origin: H. venusta x H. 'August Moon'
Flowers: Bell shaped, pale lavender to nearly white flowers, on straight, bare 15 inch scapes in July.
Added to garden: September 2005
Notes: Needs sun to colour well. Fast growing. Mine has never been REALLY gold. And I've never thought of it as a mini, but I think it's still on the list. This one does not divide easily. Tried to divide it in the spring a few years ago and had little success. I finally waited until autumn, simply chopped it in pieces and planted them separately.

Wow, it's hard to think of 'Gold Drop' as a mini when a clump can reach 20" in a few years, but there it is: registered leaf size of 2.5" x 1.8", which brings it in well under the "6 square inch" limit. I have to think the leaves on ours are bigger than that...

We have so much of this hosta it's almost a pest! It alternates (at random) with 'Blue Cadet' in our front bed, shown here in spectacular bloom. ('Gold Drop' will even rebloom some years.) Next year may be time to divide this border again, after 5 years.

(Yeah, I know I over-use this picture, but can you blame me?)

Nope, not at all. Beautiful. I have two bigger ones for my border around my swing. I'll have to go see how good they look and get a picture.

My 'Gold Drop' rarely shows as much gold as the one above. And it emerges green but develops a gold hue later.

2014 - 'Gold Drop' is getting too large for its space (and so is the 'Captain Kirk' behind it). Will have to divide or move it or both.

2015 - July 03. I still haven't divided or moved this one but need to. Will it get more yellow if it has more sun? How much sun will it tolerate?

2017 - This picture from June 9 is the only 2017 picture I have of this one as I gave it away in its entirety. I've decided that plants I don't connect with don't stay in my garden - it's too small.
