Daily Hosta #2 - 'Fire island' - Add your pics

Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Fire Island'

Description: Fast growing mound of yellow leaves with red dotting on the leaf blades and intensely red petioles which remain so throughout the season. The bright yellow leaves are shiny, corrugated and extremely wavy.
Size: medium (34"w x 14"h)
Origin: H. longipes hypoglauca x H. ‘Crested Surf’ (B. Brincka 1998)
Flowers: medium lavender, tubular flowers late in the season
Added to garden: Spring 2007

This one has seen quite a bit of growth. I've moved it a few times and when I do, it literally falls apart; so I have made some divisions from it as well. One year, I had one division in a dark corner and by mid-July it was dull green whereas the one that is in full morning sun stays yellow-chartreuse all summer. I have this next to 'Little Sunspot' and love the way the yellow foliage compliments LS. Lovely dark purple flowers are also a nice contrast. I have a number of scapes maturing in sugar water and hope for some seeds from this one.

'Fire Island' - July 15 BTW, it was not as white as some of the edges look - just the way the camera caught it.

'Fire Island' - August 3 - a smaller division I have in a pot. Put this pot on the darker patio while I was away in early October and when I returned, it had greened up so much I didn't recognize it.

This was the 5th year for 'Fire Island' in my garden, here is the largest one in early September. I've divided it several times, it's a good grower, BUT, I've found it doesn't tolerate full sun very well. By the time late June/early July rolls around I have found both 'Fire Island' and 'Paradise Island' begin to show signs of burn-out and the oldest leaves are drying up.

I do like the flowers on it, but have been unsuccessful getting it to set seed, or use its pollen on others in bloom at the same time.

It's interesting to note that last year I had a potted 'Fire Island' and an 'Amber Tiara' growing side-by-side in the spring and early in the season you cannot tell them apart based on the leaf colour, they're identical, save for the red petioles of course. 'Amber Tiara' has the same burn-out problem in full sun, BTW.

This one just keeps getting better. If it gets enough light during the season it will stay yellow or may turn a bit white if it gets too much.

Eleven - I had one once in a pot that got put into too much shade and it turned that colour of green. Can you move yours to get more sun?

This is what mine looked like in 2014. It's pretty mature. Not much difference in size, but this year it got pretty bleached. Photo late June.

2015 - July 3. Once again it got a bit bleached. I may divide this one a bit as it's crowded with 'Red October' next to it.

2016 update. I divided this one early in the season and it pouted for the rest of the season. I'm hoping for better in 2017. Photo June 4.

2017 update - it was still pouting throughout 2017. In 2018 I dug it and potted it and will give it TLC for awhile. Photo June 16.
