Post by ViolaAnn »

Name: H. 'Allan P. McConnell'

Description: An excellent small white-margined hosta. Dark green oval leaf with an irregular fine white/cream detailing to the leaf edge. Leaves are long and narrow. Dense mound. Very nice on the path edge or in a container. Vigorous grower!
Size: Small 18"w x 8"h - but grows so quickly, the mounds can become much larger.
Origin: Parentage Unknown
Flowers: Bell-shaped, lavender in July
Added to garden: late 1990's
Notes: one of my first Hostas

Makes a wonderful border as it is fast growing and easy to divide.

Allan P. McConnell is new for us this year. I have plans to replace Summer Music that has grown out of it's spot with this one in the spring.

It seemed like it took forever for this one to unfurl this spring.

'Allan P, McConnell' did well in spite of the drought conditions this year - even along my driveway and I slightly extended the border.

I haven't added any of my own pics in 2 years. Will start doing so now. The border of 'Allan P' which is along my driveway continues to do well. Whether that will continue after a nearby dying ash tree is removed remains to be see. The other border (though I've not called it that) in front of my house is slated to be removed to make space for some newer varieties.
A single large plant which is in front of my house. This particular plant will probably stay, but the others with it will be removed.

2015 - July 25

This single division is doing really well.

The border was doing really well earlier in the season, but is now in full sun due to the loss of a large ash tree. By September, the plants are looking faded and tired, but still growing well in the full sun. This phot earlier on July 25.

In 2017, I dug out the bend in that border shown above because after growing in full sun for 2 1/2 years, both 'Curly Fries' and 'Roller Coaster Ride' were growing like mad and very crowded. I needed more space for them. As a result I had about 15 pots of 'Allan P. McConnell' for plant sales both last autumn and this spring.

Here are my 'Allan P. McConnell' plants in 2017.

The single mound July 27.
