'Peppermint Ice'

Post by ViolaAnn »

'Peppermint Ice' in my garden.
'Peppermint Ice' in my garden.
A question - 'Peppermint Ice'. Is there more than one plant out there with that name? Look at the pictures on the Hosta Library. The only one that looks like mine at all is the one with the flowers. http://www.hostalibrary.org/p/pep.html Or have I got a strange one? (though I see the one at http://www.hostaparadise.com/hosta-pepp ... tails.aspx looks like mine)

And these do NOT look like mine - http://www.inthecountrygardenandgifts.c ... cts_id=249

Hi Ann,

It sure does look like there are two different variations of this out there. I have some really old clumps, probably 10 years old, and they look like yours does. How much do you want to bet that somebody started doing tissue culture of them more recently and got mostly wide margined plants of it, and that's what's selling now. It has happened before with other plants...

Take a look at the clump pictured at Hornbakers - you can see BOTH versions in that clump - the ones like yours and the wider margined ones too, all mixed together:

http://www.hornbakergardens.com/catalog ... etails.asp

Unfortunately the registration information doesn't list the margin width - that would have put this to rest one way or the other - but it also doesn't say anything about a particularly wide margin or thin center so I'd be inclined to think that the oldest picture in the hosta library is more the norm. Also considering that Peppermint Ice has always been considered a slow grower due to so much white would lead me to believe yours is more true to type.

I'm seeing too many problems coming out of TC, seems to be getting worse really, and frankly am shocked that more people aren't catching them before they hit the market or shortly after. Someone posted a picture of Allegan Fog on Garden Web the other day and it isn't Allegan Fog but looks just like the junk TCs that I got 2 years ago. Sad that they would go through so many stages before getting to a customer and nobody would notice they were wrong :(

I would guess the only way to really put it to rest would be if Kevin Walek has any original pictures to go with the registration. That way we would know for certain which plant this is supposed to be, though I bet it is the thinner margined ones. The one with wide green margins doesn't fit with the name to me :)

I think tissue culture has a lot to do with hostas looking different. When I was at the Southport flower show there was a huge clump of Patriot on a stall (part of the display) it looked nothing like the Patriot that everyone has so I asked the Stall holder, he told me that was the original Patriot and due to variations in culture every one thinks what they have is Patriot. This was more like a very dark green thin margined Francee, the strange thing is what I originally bought as Patriot has turned into a very similar plant. My other Patriot is the one every one recognises as Patriot, the Minute Man look alike.
What I am so confused about is why the original Patriot (mine) changed form to Cordelia and this year is now completely different (looks like a small leaved Barbara Ann). Wonder what it will transorm into next year, it cant be a seedling or another plant that has taken over as all my plants are in pots. It certainly is confusing but makes for exciting waiting for it to emerge.
I wish I had a camera or a technical phone so I could show pictures, but don't know how to post them anyway and im too stupid anyhows.

Thanks, Chris, for a good answer. Now, how does one contact Kevin Walek?
