Hosta of the Day - 'Designer Genes'
'Designer Genes' is a seedling of 'Miss Susie'.

This is a long topic with a lot of pictures. This plant sits in a spot I pass most often going into the garden so it gets a lot of attention and photos.
I have had it from 2009. Most of the photos are from the 2012 season.
Here it is very early: A little later with Wolverine on the right, a pair of Red October behind, and One Man's Treasure: Candy Dish has popped up in the center:

Designer Genes flowers - I noticed a curious thing about the flower shape. The early flowers have a wider petal giving the flower a more rounded look while the later ones seem to have thinner petals giving the flower a flared appearance.
The first 4 photos are from the 2011 season: End of the flower cycle: A flower photo from the 2012 season:

Last set of Designer Genes photos - seed pods. Normally they are just green but the last ones that formed this past season were purple.
This first photo is from 2011 showing green pods: Here are very late 2012 photos showing the purple pods:

Love it but have killed it twice both times in pots.
May have to try a new one and plant it in the soil

Maybe it comes up too early for its own good, but ya gotta love it when it does. Such a spring show-off.
