Nice hosta for BIG container?

Post by KellieD »

I have an area between the laundry room wall and a walkway where I will be putting a container that is about 36" tall and wide. I haven't chosen it yet so I don't know how big the opening will be. I'd love to have a sole, specimen hosta in it. I am partial to the cupped, corrugated leaves but am open to anything. Really nice flower scapes are as important as a great plant but I am open to any and all suggestions. Fragrance would be nice but not a must. I have been researching this but the choices are overwhelming! Personal experience would be great. This area gets very little direct sun and slug control will be easy.

Thanks to all of you who know and grow hostas!

Do you need the overall width of the plant limited to 36"?

You might consider a group of hostas such as 'Praying Hands', but you'd likely need three of them to fill the planter.

What zone are you in? And what will the light conditions be fore the plant?

The overall plant width could be anything. I have sources where I can buy a 5 gallon or larger plant to put in and I don't mind waiting a few years for it to fill the container. I can also do some height here without a problem.

Do you have a color for the pot ?

One thing for now, I have a Deanes Dream in such a huge pot. I have wanted to plant it in the ground for the last two years but have one problem... the pot is slightly urne shaped so the crown is bigger than the hole in the pot... do not get a pot with that shape, you think you will plant it out in time, then time pass away and - problem :(

Okay, I'll stay away from the urn shape. The pot will be terra cotta colored to match another one I have. Are you familiar with the winterproof Vietnamese and Chinese pottery? That color. An open top would more closely match the other one. I'll be getting it this next week so I can post a picture.

Kelly, I'm in zone 8. One of my favorites is Sum and Substance. It stays nice, blooms well and seems to like a pot. My pot is only about 8 gallons, and I'm moving it to a larger pot this year.

Nice pic :D

Thinking solid colored green or blue, but I'm from keep it simple Scandinavia/Denmark and other people likes more mixed colors

Bam Bam Blue - still rather new
Gentle Giant-XL Blue - may have to go to the ground after 5-7 years
Riptide-for the red

Lakeside Surf Rider - Blue
Jade Cascade - Green
Krossa Regal - Greenish
Fluted Fountain - Green
Queen of the Seas - Blue

Ginsu Knife I think looks better in a pot. This one planted in 2010.

Wow. That Ginsu Knife is beautiful. I'll need to go measure my overall area to see if I could handle the habit of that or if I'll need a tighter or more upright habit.

Thanaks for all these good suggestions. I am getting so inspired!

Wow, that Ginsu Knife is great.
I, also, once saw a picture of 'Wolverine' in a pot and it was very nice.

So many choices!

I'll be choosing the pot today. My friend is a horticultural professional and she is taking me to a wholesale pottery firm where the pros shop. I get to explore an ACRE of pottery!!! What a blast this will be.

Well, I ended up with a very large OVAL container. This suits itself best to a mixed planting which gives me all sorts of ideas for incorporating hostas.

Thank you all so much for the great hosta recommendations!
