What is it??

Post by mooie »

Hi everyone,

Haven't been on the forum for quite some time as things happen for better or worse. During that time, I've lost ever so many name tags to my hostas (pencil....always use pencil!) or they've faded or I've moved them and don't remember where and I guess as things go, I can handle that. Many of them I can come pretty close to what they are but this one just stumps me. Can you kindly help me out? Thank you!

That looks like my Ripple Effect, Mooie. I wish mine were so large :-)

I believe you are correct after looking at the Hosta Library pic. I don't have this listed in my book that stops at '08 but it may be on my 'bed' list. I'll check it out. Thanks! It really is pretty this year!

No, PUDC is one I know I don't have. The 'don't haves' are easier than the 'do haves'. :D

I agree with 'Ripple Effect' and also wish mine were that large. It's been one of my slowest growing hostas.

BTW, a couple of good points were made about using pencil. I've also found that the clear laser printed labels have held up well and I have a special garden marker that lasts for about 4 years before I need to redo the markers.

But the biggest ID help has been taking lots of pictures and immediately renaming them as to the correct variety and date. I use "xxx-130516.jpg" for May 16, 2013, for instance. That sorts by the name and date in a way that's easy to find.

Can't tell you how many times I've gone back to those pics to confirm an ID, to check on how the plants are doing at a certain stage of their development or to locate them in really early spring by referencing the surrounding plants. I've also diagnosed disease problems with some hostas. I seem to notice the symptoms better looking at the pics than I do looking at the plants.

I don't have 'Ripple Effect,' but that looks like every photo I've ever seen of it. That was my first guess, too.

I do have 'Pineapple Upside Down Cake,' and I don't think that's it.

Just chiming in on Ripple Effect as my first guess. Mine is not that big (was sooooo tiny when I got it!) but it sure looks like that.
