'World Cup' - hosta of the day - please add your photos

Post by ViolaAnn »

'World Cup' has rich gold foliage that is distinctly cupped; hybrid of 'Komodo Dragon' X 'Super Bowl' that combines the best of both parents; from the breeding program of Doug Beilstein, Mansfield, OH. Deeply corrugated, large.

I received mine as a liner when I attended the Hosta Forum west of Toronto in April 2014. So far it has been growing in a large pot and since it has the potential to become quite a large plant, I’m reserving judgement on whether I will keep it long-term. Space is very limited in my garden. Photo July 16, 2014.

I picked up mine at a local hosta sale in August. You can see that a few leaves were damaged in the recent hailstorm. I tend to stay away from cupped hostas (doubt I ever buy Abiqua Drinking Gourd) but I liked this one. I'm interested to see if it shows some mature leaves next year.

Sad to report that mine didn't make it through the winter last year. I had the pot in my enclosed porch rather than sinking it into my garden. Big mistake, I guess.

This is our 'World Cup' in July 2012. It is now (Fall 2015) 22" H and 30+"W. It's an absolutely gorgeous hosta that given the right light goes a beautiful yellow/gold especially when the hosta matures and becomes heavily corrugated. A must have.
