Hosta of the Day #5 - Beet Salad

Post by redcrx »

Beet Salad is a complex hybrid- [H. clausa normalis F2 seedling × (H. 'Ogon Tsushima' x H. yingeri F2 seedling)] from the Hosta Registry.

This plant is mentioned in the current Hosta Journal (Volume 45 Number 2) in the article on Korean Hosta since all three plants mentioned in its parentage are Korean types.

The plant has been declining steadily and I finally figured out why. It's planted too close to the holly tree that can be seen in some of these photos. I have moved the other hostas that were near this tree but didn't get to this one yet. The holly bushes have been devastating to my garden and I have them all over the place because they look nice and keep their leaves all year. When we landscaped our garden back in 07 & 08 I wanted bushes that would not be bare in the winter. Hollys and azaleas worked well for looks but when I got into hosta I didn't realize the danger hollies pose to plants around them.
