Hosta of the Day #3 - The Perfect Storm

The Perfect Storm is a hybrid of Sailors' Warning. It is very streaky and (in my opinion) unstable. The plant has bright red petioles with color going up the back side of the leaf. There is as all green form called Eye of the Storm.

This plant comes out of Arthur Wrede's work. He had one clump and broke it into 4 pieces and gave them away. Mark Zilis got one of the pieces and has been tissue culturing it so new pieces are available. My pieces are all TCs.

I have 3 different forms - one is, I think, the way it should look; the second is dark with very little streaking but it flowered; and the third looks like a stabilize piece with a white margin (really neat - in my opinion).

The third piece of The Perfect Storm looks like it has stabilized to a white edged form. If it holds this form I'll name it "The Edge of the Storm".

Still some streaks there, and looks good any way you slice it.

Q and Z doesn't show this in their current (last ) catalog. Is it a hidden offering?

I got one from an auction and one at Hosta College. Jim's is selling them. I think I saw one from Naylor Creek at the last National Convention in Iowa - that surprised me because they are hard to find (at least I think it was Naylor - I know it was somebody besides Jim's). So they are around.

Just remembered Jim had a couple at the Milwaukee convention last season.

They kind-of stick out when you see them on the vendors' table. Sparkle stands out the same way - at least to me.

I just noticed a registered stable-edged form called Polar Vortex in the MyHostas database. But I can't find any photos to see if it's the same as mine.
