Humpback Whale streaked sport!
Sometimes you find a sport that looks interesting but will need years of evaluation. Then you get a sport like this that just makes your heart go pitter patter
Here is a streaked sport of Hosta 'Humpback Whale'. From what I've seen this plant should be really fertile and could make a great streaked breeder, or in time might stabilize to an edge variegation of center variegation. I'll know a lot more over the next couple years whether or not it will stay streaky or start to stabilize.
So what do you think? Do we have a whale to watch here?

Re: Humpback Whale streaked sport!
When the Humpback Whale breaches the water it comes down with quite the splash. This is also called cresting, so we could call this splashed Humpback Whale Hosta 'Cresting Whale'.

Nice find. Lots of possibilities both for progeny and for names.

Thanks for checking it out. We are excited about this one, especially for the potential as a streaked breeder. I'll be thinking a lot about this one over the winter. It is well rooted so I won't be too worried

Carol and I are on the same wave length: 'Killer Whale' or 'Orca'
Re: Humpback Whale streaked sport!
I think it's because of where we live, Pieter! But it was also a play-on-words, that you could make a bunch of money on a hosta like this, as in 'to make a killing' !

Killer whales are a lot smaller than Humpback whales, though, and I think they are actually the largest dolphins, but I like Carol's reasoning I don't want to put too much stock in this one quite yet, since it has a long way to go, but I'm glad that I could share the excitement.

Well, between streaked and stable-variegated versions of this, plus its seedlings, you could have a boatload of hostas to name (pun intended).
I would not, however, suggest 'Ambergris'.

Re: Humpback Whale streaked sport!
You're right Chris, Orcas are a lot smaller than Humpbacks, but then again, this one isn't anywhere near maturity and won't be for a few years. Thanks for sharing your excitement, it'll be fun to see what becomes of it.
