A tour of Winterthur Museum and Garden

Post by redcrx »

Winterthur is one of the DuPont estates near Philadelphia and just outside of Wilmington, Delaware.
It's not far from Longwood Gardens in one direction or the Hagley Museum in the other direction. (There is also another Garden called Mt. Cuba in the area but I haven't gotten there yet - http://www.mtcubacenter.org/.)

I had recently put up a topic about Garden near Philadelphia http://www.perennialnursery.com/forums/ ... =1&t=60655 and got to thinking about the amount of hosta in some of those gardens. It dawned on me that I had seen a vast sea of ventricosa at Winterthur while on the tram ride that can take your through the garden. Tigger mentioned this in a topic about ventricosa http://www.perennialnursery.com/forums/ ... sa#p499049

When I saw the ventricosa it was late in their flowering period (July 14, 2015) so there were only a few flowers left but the view must have been incredible when they were in full flower. I didn't get any photos of the space since the tram was moving. My granddaughter was with me while touring the garden.

Our first stop was at the Enchanted Woods - and area designed with children in mind.

Some more photos near the Enchanted Woods.

This next photo is in a space down from the Enchanted Woods and heading toward what I think is an old quarry that is full of ferns and hosta and many other plants.

I didn't get any good photos of the quarry area.
We headed back up the hill toward the buildings and formal gardens.

I visited Winterthur last December. The traditional holiday exhibit is wonderful. I need to get there in June to see the hosta at their finest. It is great to live in the Philadelphia area with all its beautiful gardens.
