Can you recommend a vine for shade?

Can you recommend a vine for shade?

Post by Arlene »

Hello, everyone,

I'm back after a LONG absence . . . nice to be thinking of gardening again!!

I'll post this on the shade board as well, but here's my situation: I need a vine that will grow up a trellis in shade. it will get sun now and then during the day . . . but mostly shade.

I need this to hide a poor view out a window so I'd like it to be pretty dense eventually -- but I can be patient. I don't need it to cover the trellis in one season -- though i wouldn't object if it did!! It would be a wonderful bonus if it bloomed!

I'm in zone 5 -- northern Indiana.

Thanks!!

Sweet autumn clematis! I didn't start this vine here, it was here when I moved in last fall. It grows in almost all shade and had the most wonderful fragrance last year! Very ummm vigorous plant, I might add!

My #1 favorite vine for shade (or anywhere) is Hydrangea anomala petiolaris, Climbing Hydrangea. It needs sturdy support, though.
Many a great tune has been played on an older fiddle.

Honeysuckle can take a lot of shade and so can Rose New Dawn... it can bloom on the north side of a Danish house
