I know... Nelly is a pretty common clematis, but Jeez!!!! She blooms like there's no tomorrow! I have several others that i just put in last year that look like they'll be in bloom soon, can't wait to see what they all look like.

WOW, what a sight!! She's blooming her head off. :o And no matter how common, I still think it's a lovely flower in it's own right.

Beautiful NM Andi! I'm probably gonna take mine out and replace it with another. NM is noted for fading in to much sun, but I have mine on the shade garden fence and it washes out almost imedieately. I tell myself this every year and still watch it come up and fade out.

OED? Do you think it would last longer up north here, as I love that name. Used to call my dd 'Nelly' as a kid sometimes. Surely is pretty.

Andi? How long does she bloom for? Love the pic! :)

Mine is in mostly shade, just a couple of hours of very early morning sun is all it gets, and it hold the colors really well.

Cool Thanks Andi! I'll have to get one :) How tall do they get?

Jane, the stats on NM are 8-15ft. Most of the clems wont go much higher than the trellis, fence, etc they are grown on. They just get fuller. Lots of them are cut back yearly also.

Thanks OED! THAT's exactly what I need on this arbor! A tall one! :) There's a short one now, can't remember the name and it's realllllllllllllllll dark out ther, so tomorrow I'll try to remember, but it's only like 6-8 and that won't do :(

That's really pretty, Andi......Just what is the difference in NM and my Dr. Rupple....They really look close......I think that your NM is just lighter on the edges, right? When OED says that NM fades, I think mine does too...."hmm" I know the newly opened ones look darker that the older ones....

Anyway, thanks Andi......Very nice!! :D

If you want a really tall clematis, can I suggest C. montana or any of the montana varieties? The flowers are smaller and not as showy, but it can get to 20-30 feet and is just absolutely gorgeous!!!

I have Clematis montana 'Marjorie' covering a pillar by my front door, and I cut it down to about one foot every other year. It gets back up to about 20' without any problem.

Hmmm...How wide would you say it covers on top? This arbor is about 12'X 10 maybe?

Okay then! Get that brain a tinkering and find out the name! :D I Like the color purple! As my gardens attest too! I promised myself no more purple this year................ But one more won't hurt right? That and a white one would look great together meeting in the middle!

BUT I NEED A NAME PLEASE? :)

Jane, I don't think the Montanas are hardy up in Z5. Henryi is a large, white that gets quite tall. Another would be, the often growing wild, Sweet Atumn Clematis. It has very small white flowers, and blooms in late summer. The mature plant looks like it's covered in snow.
A few more commenly know tall ones. Ramona, Earnest Markham, all of the Jackmanii group.

I just posted a picture of my C. montana 'Marjorie' on a new thread, you can see how it's taking over the pillar it's covering. I love it!
