Propagating Clematis by layering

I'd like to layer some clematis, but I've never done it with this plant before. Can someone (Maybe OED?) tell me how it's done? Thanks. Phyllis

I'm nearly 100% sure he said he just lays it down on the dirt or a little under the soil and places a rock on it, to secure it. Then watches it. I think he said to leave that way till fall or next spring then cut it off between the two and transplant :)

Sounds easier than waiting for it to seed huh? :)

Which(s) one are you thinking of layering?

Phyllis, I couldn't find my old post on layering but I've since found this article with some nice drawings to explain better than I did. In addition to the article, I also bury a pot next to the plant and layer directly into the pot. That makes it easier to remove after it roots.
Hope this works for you.

Thanks for asking that question Phyllis and thanks for answering it Jane and OED. :D I think I'm going to try layering the neverblooming clematis and planting some in different spots. I would have forgotten about layering right into a pot so thanks for reminding me OED.

Thanks to all of you. The one I want to layer is my Rouge Cardinale seedling with the luminescent lavender flowers. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks -- Phyllis
