You folks haven't let me down yet so who can identify this one? It appeared out of nowhere in a container of lancifolia and is supported by a tomato basket type support.

Cypress vine! It's related to Morning Glory (Ipomea). Another similar vine is Cardinal vine. The main dif between the two is Cardnila vine has fuller leaves. The hummers love it.
My Cypress vine has been reseeding itself for over 10 yrs. They germinate quite late in the spring/early summer, but take off fast.

We've found those in different plants too, from bare root stock from Holland, and they grew so fast that we always freaked out and got rid of them! Our Ag inspector even noticed it once and was concerned that it might be a non-native invasive. Nice to know they are an annual so as long as I don't let them seed out we should be okay.

But they sure are pretty!

Thanks, guys. I like the ferny foliage and color right now but it's easy to see how it could be invasive . . .it's totally engulfed that lancifolia. It must have come in from the birds or the birdfeeder nearby.

They come up in just about every crack in my driveway, every flower bed, the compost pile, etc. I still like em and they are easy to pull out when they sprout.
Chris, good luck on not letting them seed out.

I could never ID them because we never let them bloom. If we see those ferny vines coming up in something we dig it up and bare root it and pull out all of the roots from it.

I always wondered how we could have missed a root like that, but we get them often enough in bare root hostas that maybe it is from a seed.
