What vine do I need here?

Post by eastwood2007 »

I'm winding down on creating my new hosta beds and garden area. I have an arbor I am placing over the path leading back to the new garden shed I am getting (yipppppeeeee).

I need a vine, preferably flowering, that would grow well in the same conditions as hosta. This area will get maybe 1-2 hours direct sun thru the day, but mostly filtered light/shade.

If there is a clematis that would grow under those conditions, that would be awesome!

Any ideas?

Hi Charla,

I've grown many different clematis in low light situations like this and they've always grown and flowered really well for me. At our old place I had The President on an arbor entering the hosta garden and it was amazing. Each year I would prune a couple branches to make sure it wasn't too shaded, but it definitely only received one to two hours of any direct sunlight.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, Chris! That helps alot!

I'm going to go look up 'the President' right now! I pulled the arbor into the sun as far as I could and yesterday I got hubby to agree that one branch on the old walnut tree needs to go...it's getting too close to the house....     He's so predictable! :D

Thanks for the suggestion! :D

Chris, I looked up 'the President' and it is perfect!!!!

Just the right color.

I actually think I've got one or two of these I got from Walmart a few years ago, but I don't have the tags anymore...

Thanks again!

Thanks, Karma!

I visited the site briefly and it does look terrific! I'm going to go back and shop when I have some time. I think I will wait till spring to get my new clemmies....getting kind of late here and I don't really have their spot ready, yet.

Thanks again!

In Kansas...
You can have every clemmie you want.. even I can have them in the trees and roses

Just a question on what pruning you want to do

You can plant now if youwant. just remember to plant deep

A rambling clemmie among the hostas is a fav of mine :D
