Clematis with small white flowers; I have pics!!!

Post by GrannyNanny »

Hi -- I've lost the tag for this clematis. It isn't Sweet Autumn Clematis because it blooms in early to end of June, and has darker leaves than the former. It climbs by tendrils, so it's not a bush clematis. The flowers are small and white, and bloom in small bunches. Seedheads are fluffy, like those of many other types of Clematis. Any ideas??? Thanks -- Phyllis

I finally have some pics, as of 6-19 -- here they are:
Attachments
It climbs up the side of the tree on stakes -- only gets to 5 or 6 feet.

Without a picture it might be tough, but maybe check out Clematis vitalba. That one has small flowers in white, though a lot of references say it flowers all summer so not sure about the flowering in June part.

4' tall = C. recta. 10'+ and very vigorous, blooms in mid-summer: C. fargesii, which looks just like SAC.

Chris and Viktoria -- thanks for your suggestions. I looked up all three suggestions, and none of them looks exactly like what I want. This vine does not spread and take over as the C. vitalba is reputed to do, and it is a climber, so that lets out C. recta. I'll have to wait until it blooms, which shouldn't be long if the sun ever comes out in earnest around here, and then I'll post some pics. It is planted under a tree, with the trellis tied to the tree, so it's in shade or at least dappled shade all day until maybe a little sun after 4 or 5 PM. Its being able to thrive in the shade may be the characteristic that identifies it at last. Phyllis

Could it be C. amandii? There is a named cultivar called Little White Charm that looks close?? Good luck.

Your photo is the spittin' image of a bush clematis I use to have. It was gifted from someone's garden. Never did know the name.

Marlys -- I have one of those, too, but no -- this one is a climber not a bush. It looks similar to the bush one, but its leaves are lighter than that one's leaves -- the bush has very dark, almost blue-green leaves. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Paul -- I'm going to check out yours right now. Phyllis

Paul -- Just checked Clematis Armandii. Its flowers are larger than, and not in clusters like, the ones on my clematis. Sure wish I still had the tag on this baby! Phyllis

Karma -- It does look somewhat like Sweet Autumn, but it blooms in June and early July -- is blooming now in fact. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Phyllis

GN, we we don't prune her, she will bloom earlier. Have you asked Deb at Silver Star Vinery? She is the clematis gal that knows her stuff.
