Hi
When I first built our pond about 8 years ago I used the little filter that came with the pump. It was a pain, as it was always clogging and had to be cleaned weekly.
Then I built one, if u can call it building.
I got a rubbermaid tote,,,,drilled 3/4" holes all over it, except for the bottom. I drilled holes on the lid too but left the bottom 2 inches of it with no holes, so the gunk from the bottom of the pond would not get into the box.
Next, I cut a hole in the top for the fountain head to come out and a bit out of the side for the cord.
Then I put some quilt batting from Walmart, it's about $2.50 a meter; folded up into the bottom of the tote. Place the pump down on top of it, put the lid on and put the pump in the bottom of the pond.
I have to clean or change the batting about once a summer. It is great! I even use the stuff in my aquariums in the winter time in the house.
The bigger your pond, the bigger the rubbermaid tote u can use.
