What's happening to my tree?

Post by Patrushka »

Does anyone know what this is? There are several holes in this tree and they have this foamy stuff coming out of them. DH saw some kind of black beetles there on Monday. We can't find any beetles today.

I have no idea. What type of tree, what type of beetle and are the leaves showing any signs of damage? Or anything else wrong?

My guess is some type of bark beetle. Not good.

Jane, It's an oak tree. I haven't seen the beetles. The leaves look fine. There are just holes with foamy stuff coming out of them and sap dripping down the tree.

Thanks, OED. I thought it was some kind of borer.

Here's a site (I think someone else sent me) that has info on beetles. Might have something?
http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/taxonomy_menu/2/9

Another: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7421.html

Or maybe Ohio State? http://ohioline.osu.edu/cgibin/htsearch ... sort=score

Sorry, couldn't find anything about the oozing on here quickly, but maybe you can?
