Is this overspray from insecticide damage on my lilacs?

Post by wishiwere »

This poor thing! I was cleaning up underneath it and found this mess of a bush! I think dh might have sprayed it with the ortho lawn and garden bug spray before we had everyone here a couple weeks ago!

Please tell me it will be okay? Just below this back branching I did find one of those puff ball fungi things, a purplish/black one. With all the humidity, could this be a fungus? Is there anything I can do to help this bush? It appears on some branches, not on others and also in different stages. I'll try to include the pics I got today of it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :(

Here are some closeups of the leaves and branching.

Edited when I realized I'd neglected to add the pics :(

Jane,
It's kind of hard to tell. It could be spray damage, or it could be some kind of blight. Several of my lilacs get a blight or disease nearly every year. Some of the branches look like that, but they've had it for years and it hasn't killed them yet.

Do these closeups help Linda? I've never had this before that I remember and have had lilacs of one sort or another for my life. This is relatively new variety for me, it's a pink blossom, so I'm wondering it's susceptible to disease or blight. Gosh I hope not! :(
