Planting Bareroot Viburnum Opulus

Post by Midnight Reiter Too »

Should I just store it somewhere till warmer weather? Does it need water if I store it? How do these stay alive if they have green leaves already and you don't give them any water?

They're selling these for $4.96 at Wal-Mart.

I found out that you should avoid ones that have leafed out, but it's too late. I thought they looked healthier!

Viburnums should not be sold bareroot! If you buy a bareroot, dormant one, it needs to be sweated before potting up. Since yours is already leafed out (unless I misunderstood), you need to pot it up, keep it in a cool place (above freezing, no direct sun) and pray hard!

Sweated? Is that what it sounds like? Maybe close it in a plastic bag until it sprouts? Thanks, Viktoria!

Good advice, I'd only suggest a light watering so the soil is moist.

I lay them (yes, horizontally) on a bed of moist wood shavings or sawdust and cover loosely with same, roots, branches and all (you will want to be able see a few branch tips so you can tell when they start to leaf out), and then with plastic, and place in the shade. If the location is too cool, they stay dormant longer.
