I think my viburnum is a mutant

Post by caliloo »

I think my viburnum is a mutant :(

Really, I do.

The first flowers began to open today and I couldn't WAIT to bury my nose in there to smell that wonderful sweet Mowhawk viburnum smell.

I almost gagged.

It smells like cat pee! :o :???: :(

What the heck could be wrong? Is there a cat pee smelling viburnum that I got by mistake? :x :o

Yuck.

I think I will shovel prune it tomorrow :(

It's a Mohawk? or you were just expecting it to smell like one?

There are some sweetly fragrant viburnums such as Koreanspice, and then there are the ones that smell like...ummm...; you must have bought one of the latter.

It was labeled Viburnum "Mohawk" which I believe is one of the most sweetly fragrant viburnums on the market. Of course, it wasn;t in bloom when i got it last fall, so it very easily could have been mismarked :(

Whatever it is - YUCK!

It is quite pretty though, so I guess I will move it to the very BACK of the yard.

On the plus side though... I bet the deer won't eat it

I think Mohawk is one of the best of the fragrant ones for foliage and aroma, but it sounds like you got V. lantana---probably "Mohican".

I will be on the lookout for a Mohawk this year. One that is IN BLOOM so I can sniff test it before it comes home
