Black Lace Elderberry anyone?

Post by wishiwere »

Has anyone here grown this? I'm curious about it's size.

Supposedly it's good to zone 4. But, they say also, that it puts on buds in the fall to bloom the following summer, but if that's true, then why do they say in zone 4-5 it will possibly die back to the ground? It doesn't make sense to me, that this would bloom for zone 4-5 if thats the case, right?

Someone gave me one of these, and I'm wondering where to put it. And whether it would be something that the birds would transplant seed all over as they have other wild seed?

A beautiful plant Jane
Mine was given to me as a pressie some 7 years ago about 1 foot tall. It is now about 10 feet
We are reckoned here to be the equivalent of a Zone 7 or 8
P.S. Mine isn't the lace version :)

Thanks Sam! I'm hoping even though it will die back, that it might still bloom a bit? I'm supposing yours doesn't be/c of your warmer seasons. Guess I'll have to test it :D

Do I understand that they produce berries that are good for eating and such also? If I can get them before the birds and other wildlife?

Not sure about whether or not the berries are edible Jane
I would do a google search on that one before I ate any :)

It says they are, but wasn't sure whether they would produce those when it dies back in my zone each year.

See, if it does it's going to be put further back on the property, and if it doesn't, they can I can it closer to the house. Just dont' think I'd like more 'berry' droppings all over my white car! :o

Thanks for all the answer Sam! I really appreciate it! :D

Oh well........hmmmm toss up there! WIth all the construction going on on 3 sides the next 2 years, I think I'll pass on that! I swear I've put on weight inhaling more concrete dust and sand this year than OSHA would allow! :(
