Digging up yewbushes

Has anyone ever dug up a yew bush? I have 5 in front of my house that are just getting so thin. I think I should get rid of them but I'm afraid it'll be really really rough to dig them up. They are about 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide.

Hi Ellen,
If you can get a truck near the bushes, you can tie a chain around the stumps and yank them out with the truck. This works best, of course, after you've had some rain.
