Cactus aren’t the only blooms in the desert in April.
Ocotillo has thorns, but it is not a true cactus… this is a plant people put often put too close to their houses and driveways – lovely from a distance but vicious close up…
And these cool blossoms appear on a little grass-like plant…
Desert poppies are eye-poppers…
Sunlight coming through the cactus spines can be stunning… these are in our yard…
And nothing political intended here – but we call this cactus “The Donald”…
The barrel cactuses have great colors even without blooms…
And as cacti age, they some develop interesting character…

Ending with the humble cholla… a homely cactus for most of the year, but in April it puts on its prom dress and struts its stuff!
