Idiots Walk in Beauty Ep 2 Different highways…

It’s become a common cliché’ for the Idiots… they’ll be somewhere new… often spectacular… and ask “How long do you suppose you’d have to live here before this all became commonplace – before you forgot to see the beauty?”

Of course, it happens to us all. We are constantly surrounded by beauty – if we just remember to look. But we get busy… and more importantly, we get comfortable. We forget how spectacular everyday life is. Familiarity may not breed contempt… but it definitely breeds indifference.

Travel can break that pattern. It’s like a unique item on a menu can reawaken your taste buds. Shapes and colors and forms and accents and ideas that don’t conform to your “normal” force you to “wake up.” If you are lucky, it will allow you to see the beauty in your new surroundings and retain that sense of wonder when you return home.

There are few places better suited to jolt you out of complacence than south-central Utah. The environment is spectacular. The colors, shapes, and textures of the massive landscapes provide and endless series of “wow!” experiences. You don’t even have to move. Sitting in one spot for hours, the play of light and weather transforms a single landscape into a constantly-changing delight.

The Idiots have frequently repeated Charles Kuralt’s proposition that The Beartooth Highway in Wyoming/Montana is the most spectacular stretch of highway in the US. They have now altered their position a bit. Is it possible to have two “bests”? They believe it is, when the two are so different. Scenic highways 24 and 12 in Utah, south from I 70 along the San Rafael Reef, through Capitol Reef National Park and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, to Bryce Canyon NP, is “the best.” Redrock, hoodoos, slot canyons, the immense “Waterpocket Fold” – the tortured geology created challenges so great that only a few humans have ever called it home. The Beartooth Highway is the best… so is this route. Different, but both are the best!

“Now I'm looking at the world through a windshield
And see everything in a little bit different light…”

So… walking in the Beauty of different highways…
