Okay GardenToad, you are responsible for this!!!!!

I've always like those "twisted" shrubs/trees. I noticed it right away in your picture. I'm glad Karma asked about it.

So last night I had to go pick up supplies for DH at Menards. Couldn't complete the trip without a walk through the garden center . . . where they had a half dozen "Contorted Filberts"!!!

Of course, one ended up in the back of the truck with the lumber!!!!

So what do I do now?? How fast does it grow? How long did it take yours to get that large? Do I prune it to the shape I want? What sun/shade conditions does yours live in? Anything special I should know? Heck, I don't even know where I'm going to plant it! :o But I'm thrilled to have it, a bargain at $40, I hope!

:D :D :D :D

What a great find and the price is right!! Here they go for $80 upwards!! They can be planted in full sun or partial shade. Corylus 'Contorta' AKA ' Harry Lauder's Walking Stick' they say grow from 8 to 10 ' tall so give them room.
I'll tell you, one we have on the property here when we moved in is well over 14' and still growing upwards and outwards. Since they are grafted one needs to keep the suckers cut back and you just cut to shape. In the 20 years here we have been able to start just a hand full of these as it's a long shot to do. We have a 5 year old baby out front now in the opposite corners of the property in full sun and she is loving her home out front. Can you tell this is my favorite tree?
Congrats on your new tree!

When I first got mine it was just budding out and I put it in full sun. The leaves looked kinda weird like they were close to wilting so I moved it to where it is now with afternoon shade. It still had twisted up leaves so I asked online and was told that that is normal. The leaves as well as the branches are contorted.

It is slower/medium growth. I have had it for 9 years now and it was about 16 inches tall when I bought it. I let the center grow and it is about 9 feet tall now. I take some branches from the sides and hook some branches back onto it'self toward the center in the spring and fall. I have it between the porch and a sidewalk so it has a 4 foot wide area. I tied it to the porch column to train it more upright. It gets wider than I thought it would so I should have put it where it has more room to spread. I use the cut branches for my small parrots and some thin ones are in a vases with dried flowers, grasses and pussy willow branches.

It is beautiful in the winter when the ice is covering the branches.

I went on a garden tour 3 years ago and seen one that was pruned back to 2 main trunks on the bottom about 5 feet up and left to grow out on the top. I didn't cut on mine before I saw that one very much except when the branches were very small. After I saw where they had cut 1-1 1/2 inch branches off of theirs I was more confident in shaping it to fit the area.

I paid $40 for mine. I look at them every one in a while and have seen them higher priced or much smaller plants but have never seen them cheaper.

I have tried to start cuttings and to bend a branch to the ground with a rock on it and scar it so it would root but have never had any success.
I have not had any suckers from mine. There are hostas planted all around the base .
Never before have so few with so much promised to take away so much from so many and then laugh their asses off as the so many with so little vote for the so few with so much.

The border along the driveway that Andi Doris and Kellie helped me plant the year we moved in has filled in beautifully.

Okay here is mine had to wait until something was blooming! Obviously in front of the front porch...which is a mess right now!

It is not really all that pretty maybe and for sure not peaceful!! But it has all the things I love in it. From H. Plantaginea to daylilies, echinaceas, lilies mums and salvias!

I guess it is like me...unorganized, very chaotic, but hoping to put a smile on your face!

It makes me happy!

I love spring and the flowers that it brings. This photo was taken this spring in my greenhouse. I hardened off Pansy's. Today, my greenhouse is home to my gazing ball collection. Can you tell the days are getting longer? Come on spring!. Later, Love, Lisa

This is a great thread. I've returned to it several times, but never posted on it.
It's hard narrowing it down to just one, but this shot of the pond is one of my favorites.

I'm new to this forum but have enjoyed looking at pictures of everyones gardens. Here is one of mine from last year. This is what you would see if you drove into the driveway and came for a visit. McT

KHT,

The little one is Moonstruck.

Mr Big is just starting to poke up now. It takes him a while to get going each year but once he gets going, he really goes.
