More Daturas

Post by kHT »

We are currently growing 7 varieties and have yet to see most of them bloom. But here are just a few to peak some interest. Sorry some aren't clear, it's hard to get them just right where they are located at.

Nice. I have 5 varieties and have collected seeds from two so far, the others are in big thorn apples waiting to burst.

When I move house, I'm hoping to start a nursery for dats, brugs, hibiscus and irises, mainly.

I have more seeds now. On holiday I found some small flowered ones growing wild with ripe seed pods, and another larger flowered one, probably metel looking at the leaves growing in someone's garden. Unfortunately it didn't have any flowers so I don't know the colour. A ripe seed pod was sticking through the fence so it made the trip home in my pocket. :-?

They split into four sections, same as lilac-la-fleur. Same shape flowers too.

Gruntfuttock,
The D. lilac-la-fleur as you call them got huge this year, well over 6 foot tall and the trunks were 3" across. I tossed a full 5 gallon paint bucket of seeds in the recycle yard can as I'm not going to anymore of them. They took over one half of the Datura garden and were scary!! I also did the metel ones in white, purple and yellow double and triple of which I just loved the triples!! Then I got some seeds of the D. rubra one, I have fallen in love with this one and it ranks up with the D. Missouri Marble. While I'm talking about that one I also got a solid green one this year!! Have crossed the two and did the cross of the Brugmansia and Datura again this year only using the reverse variegated brugmansia beside the variegated one.
Plenty of seedpods on both the plants!! The other Datura I got seeds of was the D. ferox and that is also another keeper due to the seedpods. Let me post more photos, only one I don't have is the one of the double white, it was trashed before I got a photo and I wasn't impressed with it or the double yellow. Oh no I miss counted that would be 8 not 7 unless you count the non variegated D. MM which would be 9???? I just love these as they are so easy to care for unlike the cousins.

Then there is the triple D. melet var chlorantha that is breath taking but no seedpods yet so I'll have to look up whom I got these from and request more seeds.

OMG those are beautiful. I just have the plain white variety...I definitely am going to have to branch out a bit. I love their fragrance at night and how the white ones glow in the moonlight.

Oh Karma! You're wetting my appetite for MORE daturas next year!

Last summer I grew those lovely triple lavender...and forgot to gather seed in the fall. This Spring...I was excited to find 3 tiny seedlings in the same area! Those plants are as tall as me now...and the blossoms have been spectacular!

I'll be SURE to save seed this year.! Thanks for the beautiful pics........p

I was a prat last year and somehow mislabeled my seeds. I still don't know how it happened, I'm being very careful this year.

I have some triple yellows that I have saved seeds from and double whites in bloom now. I have single large flowered whites from two different sources. Some have a slight purple blush to them and the others have much more purple on them. The lilac la fleurs are certainly prolific in producing seeds, I have far too many, but I'm sure I'll have many offers to take them off my hands.

I am finding it very frustrating not being able to match the different varieties to their scientific names as the internet seems to have so many misnamed pictures, th same applies to brugs.

I'll have to collate a collection of leaf and flower pictures and see what the experts can tell me.

Did you read their Dat site, I though it was pretty complete as Tony across the pond is the expert on Dats in my book.
Ask there and I'm sure he will answer or fire off your questions and I'll check to see what I can find.

Gals I'll see if I can round us up some seeds of those fluffy ones?? Are ya game?

Wow, those pics are awesome! I have never known anything about Daturas, so I have just been kinda lurking here. They are spectacular!!! I think I would like to try...how would a newbie go about getting started? Where do I learn how? Where do I get them? What conditions do they need to grow?

Again, WOW!

Thanks for the info, Karma! I'll do a little research first and then maybe I will take you up on the seed offer...only if it wouldn't take from someone else. Thanks again! :D
