propagation of non-hardy mums

Has anyone tried this? There are a few florist's mums or non-hardy (not sure what their correct name is) that I really love. The ones I like are fairly expensive (to me) for an annual plant. I do have a greenhouse. Has anyone tried wintering these over? What about taking cuttings for next year? If it is a patented plant, can I save cuttings for myself as long as I don't sell/give them away?
How are they propagated?
