For those of you asking about the plant, here's a pic of my mass of Pardancanda. Mostly oranges and yellows. Some the oranges are spotted, some are a bit pinkish, others are plain.

Here you can see the iris-like foliage and how the small flowers are held in loose clusters above the foliage. Even when they are not in bloom, the foliage is nice. It doesn't get ratty-looking like some foliage does.

One cool thing about these flowers is that when they are spent, those petals twist tighly closed. Really cool.

The name blackberry lily comes from the dark blackberry-like seed pods that form on the stalks after the flowers are done.

John, these are just my observations from growing these. You are the expert, please feel free to correct anything that I've mis-stated.

EDIT - Added another pic that shows the old blooms 'twisting' closed.

Very pretty Jane! I'm not an expert, just spent too much time growing and researching them!

And I will have plenty of seed in the fall for anyone who needs some!

It was probably about 5 years ago that I bought one plant and planted it here. It self-seeds and I rip out handfuls in the spring when they come up and leave the ones that are growing where I want them. It's such a nice plant to work with this way. Self-seeds and spreads nicely, but not invasive and easy to pull out if you don't want it. Transplants easily too.

This is also where all the ones I gave to my Hallson's friends came from! :D

I hope you get those yellows, Lucy!!!

Jane, do you find a wide variation of colors and patterns in the self-sown seedlings?

No color variation to speak of. Just variations of orange and yellow. Some border on pinkish, but I've never had a real pink, red, or purple.

Among the orange, I do get a good variation of pattern.

Lucy, don't you just love those bicolors? How does that happen, one wonders... If these flowers were only a bit larger, they would give daylilies a challenge for popular sun perennial...

 LucyGoose!

I noticed a variation in the yellows too. :-? I thought the lighter one might have been open longer when I saw it and the darker one was newly opened.

I love the bicolor too! 8-) It looks pinker than mine.

That is fantastic Paul! Yes, that is the only purple one we've seen so far. There are a couple solid yellow ones with very faint spotting and then lots of red/orange mixes. If you can share some seeds of it with us it would be greatly appreciated :D

Thanks for the picture too!

There is a huge harvest of Pardancanda seeds this year, and as promised, will be available to anyone who wishes to send an address label and 2- 37¢ stamps, I have padded mailers. If you wish seeds from purple parents, let me know.

Please send me a PM for details!

Thanks,

John
