Perennial Fuschia

What a nice little pop of color this time of year when everything else is beginning to look tired. :)

Looks great! Have you overwintered this plant yet? I keep seeing it in catalogs and actually bought some one year but the starts were so poor and spindly that they barely survived the summer and nothing returned over the winter.

If it really is cold hardy I would love to try it again.

Thanks! It overwinters fine for me, but it always looks so small and frail until this time of year. Starting in early August, it perks up and flourishes. By September, I have a small airy mound about 12 inches.

I don't do anything special to help it overwinter either. This year, I'm going to try and surround it with 4in to 5in stones to help insulate it and collect to winter sun's warmth. This technique saves my tassel fern year after year. Those always die if I don't use the stones.

I'm fairly close to you, so our winters are similar (with the exception of lake-effect snow). I'd give it another shot! :)

Well, let us know if it makes through another winter, and I might even try it! Always love these, but it's too windy for those hanging one they sell around here. (the annual ones).

Do you plant this in the shade then?

HostaDesigner, which one is this one. When I first started out it was with these and yes they can be overwinter in some area in the ground. She is sure a beauty!! I still grow only one fuschia.

It's lovely. What zone has it been overwintered in?

I'm in 5b. With Lake Michigan nearby, I probably flirt with zone 6.

Thanks, HostaDesigner.
In zone 4 here (some think zone 5 but the zone 5 plants do die)
I really like them as do the hummingbirds!

So pretty, I've been wanting one of these but worried about it surviving the winter. I'll have to give it a try.

8-weeks later

8 weeks later and still blooming strong. This gives you an idea of the size as it gets bigger late in the season. It's probably around 20-24inches wide.
