Shell Mound, Cedar Key, Florida

Post by fullofit »

We are in Florida for the month of January, and have visited some sites. This pic is from the Shell Mound in Cedar Key Florida. This is where the Indians used to pile all their empty shells from the Gulf. It has made quite a large 'mound' and since then filled in with soil and debris. It is grown over but still retains the shells and you can see them on the paths as you walk. This pic is from a dug out spot under a tree, and even tho it is hard to distinguish from this photo, it is packed with shells and shell pieces. All those little white pieces are shell pieces. It would be very difficult to dig with a shovel in this ground.
