07 Roses in OC's Yard

Post by oldcoot »

They are not really OC's, they are the good Lords, but OC takes care of them for HIM as best he can. :D :D :D His yard is in so much shade, Roses do not do very well. But a few places where the sun sneaks through He does have some pretty ones. His whole drive way is one of those places and one side is covered in Red and White alternating Hedge roses planted about 10 years ago, and trimmed back repeatedly as soon as they finish blooming. He does have a few miniature roses that bloom in his back yard and occasionally are very pretty. Last year he wasn't well in the spring because of a January Case of pneumonia which took him a long time to get over but this year he is on a roll with all his flowers, including his Roses and his pretty Hostas. (With his yard full of shade they are a Natural)

Glad to be back on the Rose Forum this year.- OC

   is probably as close to blooming as OC's roses will get to blooming this Year. Went out this Morning and looked at them while the kids were pulling weeds, and all the buds that WERE on theses branches are black and dead. Most of the leaves are dead and dropping off. The Canes still look viable, so maybe later this summer.....OC

Hopefully a little pruning & they will bounce back, OC. Sure hope so!

Unless they are once-blooming type of old garden roses, they will recover and be fine. I find roses of any type put out fewer flowers in the heat of summer, but will put on a good show in the fall. I would not prune them back, unless there are dead branches; if you want to do a lot of work, you could prune to the first five-leaflet leaf below each dead bud, but really not necessary.
