I've waited for years to have roses on my rose arbor. Three or more years ago I planted a climbing Cecil Brunner rose. This year it finally bloomed. I was waiting for light pink roses. The deer have chewed off some of the smaller branches. And what I have left is a puny climber with dark, dark red roses.

How disappointing!

I love dark red roses, but I get irritated when it is out of sort.

Are you sure the puny climber isn't the rootstock Dr Huey taking over? Dr Huey isn't known as a climber, but can be really scraggly and leggy.

Thank you. I believe it is Dr. Huey. Should I dig it up next spring and plant a new Cecile Brunner? I want pink roses, not red ones.

Absolutely!

I would dig it and replant now(depending on your local temps). I believe Cecile Brunner may be a once bloomer, but planting and watering A LOT and light fertilizing between now and July will give you a stronger plant next spring. Okay - I may amend that - are you mail ordering and planting bare root? I think it may be too late in the season for that, but if you are planting a growing rose in a pot you should be fine. I haven't ordered roses in a while, but as I recall Chamblee's was good, and I *think* they might have them "own root" which means since it isn;t grafted there is zero chance of the rootstock taking over again. You also might consider Roses Unlimited or Antique Rose Emporium. Make sure you get the climbing variety if that is what you are looking for.

Best of luck - Cecile Brinner is lovely and has an amazing scent... Dr Huey is rootstock for a reason.

Do not know what you do, but here we change the soil if we are going to plant a new roses in the same spot du to nematoes.
On other possibillity is to plant tagetes for the rest of the year and replant in the spring.

If it is not on its own root, you need to plant it 4 to 5 inches depper than the ??? Do not know what you call the conetion point

Sorry you had such a sads experience with your Rose Arbor. OC never had one of those. Had been planned and designed, but got sick before he could put it in. Hopes to this spring. Has had good luck with Rose grown else where .He has a lot of clay in his soil and this seems to hold enough moisuture to carry them through the summer.
