Big Brown Grasshopper?

Post by wishiwere »

So anyone venture a guess on this guy? We've (I've) always seen/had small green grasshoppers, but never one this big or BROWN! Never knew there were different types I guess :D He was huge, like 2 inches or so......

So you resident 'bug' knowledgeables? What is this?

There are lots of different hoppers. We used to catch those big brown ones and they would "spit tobacco" in your hand. No idea what it was, but they would spit up a really nasty brown liquid if you held them to tight.

Well, Lucy, gotta agree with you on that thought. GMTA!

I swear I've never seen such a large one or a brown one. So it was quite the surprise. I'm used to the little green 1 inchers! This thing was 2 1/2 times the size!

You're probably right, but I couldn't do anything to him, I was so intriqued! He'll probably thank me next year with 1000's of newbies

 grasshopper, Jane!

OED, I remember that brown tobacco stuff they spit. Believe it or not, I used to catch grasshoppers when I was a kid. :o

I just found a grasshopper today when I was deadheading the Honeycomb butterfly bush....It was sitting on a branch, and scared me. He never did jump away, just turned himself around....I ran for the camera and got pic's but I will load them later....I didn't do anything either.....He was pretty big.

You mean there are other types of grasshoppers besides the big brown ones? Those are all I see here in OK.
Are they the same as a locust?

Most of the ones I have in my yard are green and brown. I'd post a pic if I thought I could take a decent one.
