2005 southern migration completed

Post by phloxywis »

the southern ultra-light led migration of the 2005 cohort was completed december 13th when 19 juvenile whooping cranes landed in marion county florida. this is a new destination for the birds. they hope to move them to chassahowitzka national wildlife refuge in about 1 month when the adult whooping cranes from the previous migrations have dispersed from the refuge.

on 12/17/2005 the errant crane #309 who got disorientated on her northern migration and wound up in new york and canada was captured and crated in south carolina and then transported to northern florida. she is close to breeding age and they hope she'll stay in the area (for now) and make the acquaintance of the other cranes.

lots more interesting posts at the site--- reports of the migrating flock between canada and texas and they say they'll keep us updated on crane happenings through out the winter.
