Found a surprise in a pile of POTS!

Post by wishiwere »

This is the area I cut down brambles a couple weeks ago. These pots were wrapped in brambles and I hadn't gotten to them yet. The other day i found this little nest with 2 bluish eggs and the little wren that would run away (not fly) as if it were hurt when I was near.

Tonight I peered in and she hopped away again. I had the dogs near, so I quickly glanced and saw one had hatched and the other egg appeared intact.

I walked the girls back up to the house and by the time I grabbed the camera, the other had hatched! They can't be more than 3/4 of inch each! Very tiny! It's amazing she'd do this on the ground. Especially since dh saw a woodchuck come out from under this shed!

Wow - do you know for sure what type of bird it is? The action of the parent sounds so much like a killdeer - but obviously that would be a lot bigger than a wren - and that's no killdeer nest. What a great find.

I'm pretty sure it was a house wren. I'll try to get a picture of her tomorrow morning. She's tiny too. And hides in the spruce nearby when I come around.

Everything I read said they (wren's) lay nest that are cavity type. This definitely isn't, but maybe it's not made when they have a cover like the pot to create in?

I found another nest on the ground this weekend near here in a tall spruce. I'm thinking though (it was larger) that it was a mourning doves. The blackbirds appear to have taken over their tree this year :(

I couldn't believe how tiny these birds were! It's amazing a spider doesn't eat them! Too cute!

Oh my gosh look how tiny those babies are!!! I'm surprised she'd build her nest on the ground. I hope no critters get in there and .........well.......banish the thought. Hope we get to see more pics are those little fellas grow up. :)

Oh my goodness! They are so cute!!! :D  One year we had little wrens clinging to the window frame, the side of the house and perched in the garage. I think they were getting flying lessons.

House wrens are noted for nesting in odd places.
The groundhog should be no worry for the babys.

Pat, if it doesn't rain, I'll try to get daily updates.

OED, woodchuck who would gladly make 'mincemeat out of my 'girls' if they corner it.

Okay, now that they are hatched, they aren't. But........

I thought woodchucks were very mean? I'm not seeing that in the info unless injured or cornered. Which the girls could/would do if they catch it's scent. Both are nearly blind and basically deaf, so it's scary to think they could corner it without even realizing or hearing the hissing from it! :(

Update 5-10-06

Post by wishiwere »

Couldn't get a great pic, b/c of the light, but here's today's pic. It's cloudy out but bright, but you can see how much more hair they have today already! I read they leave the nest really early! :(

Update.......mom on the nest :)

Post by wishiwere »

It's cold (about 42 I think right now. I hope she's able to get off them to get food for herself and them. It's been a cold drizzle all day. :(

Anyone for sure what she is?

She's so cute when she 'hops' away, as though she's injured and can't fly, that I forget to really concentrate on a good pic of her. She' rather brown. I wasn't sure what she was. This is the first pic that turned out fairly good. She's facing south and unless the sun is mid-day I can't get a good pic of her. It's been raining for what? 4 days now! Poor thing....

One of my favorite little birds too! Nothing beats that beautiful song.

I think English sparrows give ALL sparrows a bad rap.....so many different varieties, all with different habits and songs. We often find a song sparrow or a chipping sparrow nest in one of the pots of shrubs by the greenhouse at school. I figure everything's a learning experience.....so it's a great way to teach the kids respect for all living things!......p

5-16 pictures of babies

Hope you can see this okay. Bird on right is facing away and on left is facing toward you. Another overcast day that isn't conducive to pictures being good! :(

5-17- update. Mom was feeding them, and not happy with the interruption, but at least she is trusting me more now to be near. SHe used to hop away and chatter from the lilacs when I came around. By the time I got the first picture taken, their mouths were shut and everything was still, including mom and her look she was giving me. I was only about 2 feet from her, so I was suprised to see her sit there.

Tell me? Do you also see 3 mouths in this. I swear when I enlarge it i see 3 side by side!
