How can you love squrrels and hate chippies? In MN I had one eating out of my hand. He never messed with my plants. My cat, Spider, loved salivating over him too.

I agree, Claudia...
I don't know how our county has missed them so far as I have heard of out-nout epidemics north and south of us. I hope we have something in our soil or something that makes them stay away. Maybe it is the rocks and heavy clay... The same stuff that makes gardening so enjoyable here.
I used to think they were so cute until I heard all the damage they could do...

Aww ...I gotta admit I love Chipmunks, but then I have not even seen one since I visited CO and lived in CA Sierras. I don't think they live in OK at least not in central OK
I bet they can be destructive though.... their cousins the squirrels sure are but ..I noticed they are not as bad this winter, and I think it is because the ice broke most of the limbs off the tops of the trees. The abundance of nuts is now gone, and they are having to learn new ways to manuver through the trees

We don't have them in the wild here, but people keep them as pets. They cost a fortune to buy, you're sitting on a gold mine.
Zone: This is England we don't do zones. Pick any number between 2 and 11

Yep Nanny, your pictures show why they can be a problem, despite their "cuteness".
They are small enough to get into tiny spaces. We got serious about eliminating them when we discovered they were going up the walls UNDERNEATH the vinyl siding. From there they would have possibly been able to get into the attic, then the house, that would be TROUBLE.
That summer we caught nearly 20 of them in trap. A new one in the trap every other day. We've since added an outdoor can that seems to keep them at bay. As a matter of fact, he (the cat) spent last summer stalking them at the neighbors house across the street. We see one go under their garage door on a regular basis.
Good luck moving those little critters out!

Oh my gosh Nanny!
I don't know how I missed all these pics. Especially the last couple. You know how pesky they can be. We had exactly the same problem a couple years ago and chippie must have gotten locked in the garage and he sure chewed his way out. Then we had to get that rubber replaced and it was specially made for the door. grrrrr.
I like to leave the garage door up on the weekends when gardening and in and out all the time, but now DH insists that the door stay down.
It's funny how people nickname things and I just started calling them chippies being silly and now I see that lots of people call them that.
Those are really great pictures.

This chippie sat out here for 2 hrs today. It's partner, the one that sits on the rock, went across the road into the woods on monday, and hasn't been seen since. It is ALMOST kind of sad. I was standing at the other end of the porch and it didn't even see me.
