BUG ID's pretty please?

Post by wishiwere »

Thanks to anyone who can help! Seems I'm surrounded by bugs I've never seen before! Hm....you'd think with all these birds, they'd control them! Then again....OH! I didn't feed this last winter and have 1/4 the feeders, so maybe that's why this year I'm seeing them! Oh my! Bugs or feed the birds.. I need a job! :(

Here's the first couple...anyone?\

I saw these last year, but up by the workshop. The extension office said they were common field ants!
This year, they were out under the pumpkin patch and carrying or transporting these brown seed like things to the grass area outside the fence.

Could it be? Duffle bags for their army?

Oh, their butts are black and their bodies are bright red. Almost glow in the sun!

Not sure what kind of ants they are but those things they are carrying are probably eggs.
Either their own or some they stole from another nest of ants :)

Hm....that's what I was thinking but I've never seen such large eggs for ants. Usually they are microscopic almost. Very tiny little white things I thought? I've seen those before, but this thing is huge!

I'm thinking the "eggs" are the larvae which grow. So they are adults by the time they are ready to shed from the larvae stage.
Now I could be wrong hehe.
But it makes sense, I've never seen a baby ant!

This site shows the fire ant stages and yes, they do start as larvae and grow bigger.
